There are a lot of reasons why you are to get standard shipping from Canada to US. For one, you are a Canada-based online seller who caters to customers from the United States. Whatever your reasons are, may it be for business, you would want the best deals when shipping from your Canadian location to the US.

What You Need to Know in Standard Shipping From Canada to US

Aside from choosing which courier you can use for shipping services, here are other tips and requirements you need to know about it.

Prohibited and Restricted Items

Not all products can be shipped across the border. The guidelines are pretty sensible as there are prohibited and restricted items. Items that are listed under prohibited items are not going to be entertained or allowed to ship even in the smallest quantity or size. Restricted items, on the other hand, are those with regulatory, safety, hazard, or other considerations that may need additional leg papers when these are shipped across borders.

Examples of prohibited items are anything that costs over $20,000 without prior approval, fine art, fine jewelry, watches that cost over $1,000, stamps, vouchers, tokens, living animals, time-sensitive materials or documents, pornography, or any obscene materials. But, it is best for the products’ retail value to be less than $800 to avoid charges. Plus, shipping companies sometimes decline prohibited items to avoid hassle in customs clearance.

Restricted items are certain classes of flammable liquids, corrosives, gas, oxidizers, toxic substances, and organic peroxides; flowers; gems (may these be cut or uncut); household goods; batteries, and medical devices.

So before shipping items, check whether these are included in the extensive list of prohibited and restricted items. Doing so beforehand can ultimately save you hassle in the long run. You can check USPS' website for the complete list of these items.

Needed Paperwork

Aside from knowing which products you can ship out and which ones aren't, you should also be familiar with the paperwork you will need to file out.

To put it simply, all shipments should have documentation from customs. Envelopes that weigh less than 16 oz are exempt from this but if your products are going beyond that, make sure to file and document your paperwork accordingly. There are different customs forms for different kinds of shipments. Generally, this may include commercial invoices, Bills of Lading, Canada Customs Invoices (CCIs), proof of delivery, electronic export information forms, and import permits to name a few. However, a shipping partner like Stallion Express allows you to skip these processes. With them, all you need to do is enter all required form fields on shipment details when creating and purchasing their labels, including but not limited to: item description, declared retail value, weight, dimension, etc.

Costs

One of the things you should consider is the cost. You can expect that it will be different from the standard US to Canada shipping cost. Don’t forget to price and quality match before deciding which shipping services to get.
